When talking about retro campers, it's likely that an image of one of the colorful vintage Shasta trailer models enters your mind. The company has been manufacturing them in vibrant shades of Butternut Yellow, Matador Red and Seafoam Green since 1941.

Consider the Classics

The Shasta Compact

These tiny retro campers had a 10-foot cabin and a weight of just 1,115 pounds, meaning it could be pulled by just about any vehicle, including a Toyota Celica or similar vehicle with limited towing capacity. It could sleep four people in two twin beds and two upper bunks and had a propane stove, sink and icebox.

The Shasta Airflyte

The Shasta Airflyte was so popular that the company brought it back in 2015 in an identical but modernized canned ham camper to celebrate the company's 75th anniversary. The window sizes, door sizes and overall measurements are the same on this 16-foot trailer, and all modern modifications are tucked away so you'd never know you weren't in the 1961 model. Well, that is, until you turn on the 5,000 BTU air conditioner, crank up the Bluetooth stereo or throw some popcorn in the microwave. A wet-bath substitutes for the design's original closet, and you can enjoy energy-efficient LED lighting inside and out.

Go Ultra Modern

Although the classic canned ham campers can be described as cute and cozy, the 21st-century version of Shasta's trailer rolls out luxury and elegance.

The company offers two basic styles in a myriad of lengths and options. Classic travel trailers come in lengths up to 32 feet long and hook up to a hitch on the back of your vehicle. Fifth-wheel models stretch to lengths of 39 feet, and both models come with slide-outs that can make the recreational vehicles seem more like an apartment – a far cry from the cramped but adorable campers of yesteryear.

Soak Up Modern Amenities

You'll be "roughing it easy" when you tuck into the modern style of Shasta camper. How about sleeping in your own private queen bedroom suite while the kids are snuggled in bunks in a room at the other end of the trailer? Gather the family for dinner at the full indoor kitchen with a dinette and modern tweaks that include a glass-top cook range, microwave and pantry. Or, choose a model with an extra outdoor kitchen/barbecue combo with a built-in entertainment system, and enjoy the nice weather. There are even options for outdoor showers to rinse away sand and dirt from a busy day before you head inside.

Kick back in dual rocking recliners to watch a movie on a flat-screen TV or, better yet, upgrade to theater-style seating with heat, massage, cup holders and individual lighting. Opt for a crackling fireplace, motion sensor lighting, memory foam furniture and more.

Size Sometimes Matters

Back in the day, Shasta camper model sizes maxed out at 19 feet. That meant you could travel the United States carefree and pull into any camping spot from coast to coast. With today's larger-sized campers, there's much to consider when choosing the size of a model.

For example, do your plans include visiting national parks from coast to coast? A 19-foot Shasta camper will get you into all except about 2 percent of campground spaces and give you access to most size-restricted roads. However, if your speed is staying in commercial RV parks with all the amenities, even the largest rig won't be an issue.
